Glossary 18 terms
The most important countdown clock and LED display terms, explained briefly and factually.
C
- Character height The height of the digits on the display. Rule of thumb: 1 cm of character height gives about 5 m of readable distance.
- Colour depth The number of greyscales per colour, expressed in bits; more bits give finer colour gradients.
- Contrast ratio The ratio between the brightest and darkest output; higher contrast makes the digits sharper to read.
- Count-up clock The same display in count-up mode, counting the time since an event, such as days without an accident.
- Countdown clock An LED display that counts down to a set date or time, to the second.
G
- Greyscale The number of brightness levels per colour; more greyscale gives smoother images on a full-colour display.
I
- IP rating A code stating how well the housing is protected against dust and water; decisive for outdoor use.
L
- Legibility The ease with which the digits are read, depending on brightness, character height and viewing distance.
N
- Nit The unit for screen brightness; a high nit value makes a countdown clock sun and daylight readable.
P
- Pixel pitch The centre-to-centre distance between two pixels, in millimetres; a smaller pitch gives a finer image.
R
- RC600 The controller with which you set the count-down, count-up and time and start or pause the clock.
- Refresh rate How often per second the screen rebuilds its image; a high refresh prevents flicker, also on camera.
S
- Size The dimension of the clock, from about 15 cm character height to displays 15 metres wide.
- SMD LED An LED type with the red, green and blue chip in one surface-mounted package, the current standard.
T
- Target date The date and time the countdown clock automatically counts down to.
- Timer A function to count a duration down or up, for example for a presentation or a test.
V
- Viewing distance The distance from which the digits read easily, determined by character height and brightness.
W
- World clock A display mode in which the display shows the current time of a time zone.
